The session began with a short welcome note by Mr. Aiyappan Pillai, Secretary, IEEE Bombay Section, who also introduced our distinguished speaker to the audience.  The speaker began with Terahertz concepts and its various applications in components and instruments primarily developed for space science applications in radio astronomy and planetary sciences. Further he moved on to discuss how these waves are being increasingly used in commercial applications such as high speed communications and security imaging. The research areas at this frequencies and impact of recent progress in CMOS technology and InP HEMT based amplifiers in these bands were highlighted.

In all, it was an interesting and didactic session that gave an overview of the state of Terahertz technology and also detailed the challenges faced.
