Life Member (LMAG) events for the year 2020 – Bombay Section
Event 1: 16 September 2020
Speaker: Dr. Vikram Dalal, Distinguished Professor, Iowa State University, Life Fellow, IEEE
Date: Wednesday, 16 September 2020
Time: 6:30 PM
Location: Virtual
Speaker : Dr. Vikram Dalal, Distinguished Professor, Iowa State University, Life Fellow, IEEE
Topic: Perovskite Solar Cells: Physics, Technology and Potential Problems
Abstract:
Perovskite solar cells are a new photovoltaic (PV) technology which has the potential to be a breakthrough technology for the conversion of solar energy into electricity. In this talk, I will describe the physics of perovskite materials, and discuss various device designs and material properties that make this technology so attractive. I will show that the material is both electronic and ionic, and that the ions play a major role in the stability and operation of the device. Many of the problems, such as hysteresis and instability upon light exposure are directly tied to the ions generated in the material. The material has several potential problems, among them thermal
instability, instability against moisture and the presence of toxic materials such as Pb. I will discuss what leads to instability in light, how to eliminate thermal instability, and also how to minimize the instability against moisture. I will also discuss some recent research results from
the literature.

“Recent Developments in India’s National Solar Mission”
Abstract:
India’s National Solar Mission is one of the most ambitious in the world. It seeks to have 100 GW of solar energy installed by 2022, and reach 300 GW by 2030. These goals will go a long way towards India’s transition from fossil fuels towards cleaner forms of renewable energy. Are these targets achievable? This talk will present an overview of solar photovoltaics, and will discuss the challenges as well as opportunities provided by the National Solar Mission. The talk will also cover important new technology developments world-wide, and how these will affect India’s National Solar Mission.
Prof Juzer Vasi :
Juzer Vasi has been with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay since 1981, where he is currently an Emeritus Professor. He has worked in the areas of microelectronics and photovoltaics. He was the founding Principal Investigator of the “National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education” (NCPRE), which is India’s leading R&D centre in photovoltaics. He was an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices during 1997-2003, and has been Chair of the IEEE EDS Technical Committee on Photovoltaic Devices since 2017. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), and a Life Fellow of IEEE. He received Lifetime Contributions Awards from IIT Bombay in 2013 and from INAE in 2018. Prior to joining IIT Bombay, he was on the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University and IIT Delhi. He has a B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay, and a Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University.
