The IEEE PES/IAS Joint Chapter of the Bombay Section is elated to inform you about a talk on “SMART Power Flow Controllers – A Necessity for Future Power Grid” - Talk” by Dr. Kalyan Sen - President & CTO, @USA on September 29, 2022, at 5PM / 17PM IST through In Person / Physical mode @ Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Bombay. We extend a cordial invitation to you to join us @ Electrical Engineering Department for the talk in person. For registration drop an email to Bhanwar.Bishnoi@ieee.org Abstract: Power flow control techniques have been practiced, from using inductors, capacitors, transformers and load tap changers in the earlier days of electrical engineering to power electronics-based solutions in recent years. Even though the costs and complexities of the available solutions vary widely, the basic underlying theory of power flow control is still the same as it always has been. The question is which solution one should employ. The answer depends on knowing what the true need is. The power industry’s pressing need for the most economical ways to transfer bulk power along a desired path may be met by building new transmission lines, which is a long and costly process. Alternately, it may be quicker and cheaper to utilize the existing transmission lines more efficiently. The key is to identify the underutilized transmission lines and harness their dormant capacities to increase the power flows to the lines’ thermal limits. The presentation is designed to provide the basic principles of power flow control theory, an overview of the most commonly used power flow controllers, and future trends. The audience will hear from an expert who actually designed and commissioned a number of power electronics-based FACTS controllers since their inceptions in the 1990s. About Speaker: Kalyan Sen is the President & Chief Technology Officer of Sen Engineering Solutions, Inc. (www.sentransformer.com) that specializes in developing SMART power flow controllers—a functional requirements-based and cost-effective solution. Kalyan worked 33 years in academia and industry. He was a key member of the Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) development team at the Westinghouse Science & Technology Center for which he became a Westinghouse Fellow Engineer. He contributed to concept development, simulation, design, and commissioning of FACTS projects at Westinghouse. He conceived some of the basic concepts in power flow control technology for which he was elevated to the IEEE Fellow grade with the citation: for the development and application of power flow control technology. He is the Co-inventor of the Sen Transformer. Kalyan received BEE (first class honors, 1982), MSEE (1983), and PhD (1987) degrees, all in Electrical Engineering, from Jadavpur University (India), Tuskegee University (USA), and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (USA), respectively. He also received an MBA (2012) from Robert Morris University (USA). He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania and New York. Kalyan has authored or co authored more than 25 peer-reviewed publications, 8 issued patents, 2 books, and 3 book chapters in the areas of power flow control and power electronics. He is the Co author of the book titled, Introduction to FACTS Controllers: Theory, Modeling, and Applications, IEEE Press and John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 2009, which is also published in Chinese and Indian paperback editions. His second book is titled, Power Flow Control Solutions for a Modern Grid using SMART Power Flow Controllers (ISBN: 9781119824350), IEEE Press and John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2021. IEEE Bombay Section welcomes you to the 'Magical City' of Mumbai for the 10th Edition of TENSYMP during 1- 3 July 2022. The theme of TENSYMP 2022 is “Technologies on the horizon for the benefit of humanity”. About the Event The IEEE Region 10 Symposium (TENSYMP) is one of the official annual conferences owned and organised by the IEEE REGION 10 (Asia Pacific), the other being The IEEE Region 10 Conference (TENCON). TENSYMP is a theme-based conference, bid by an R10 Section and organised typically during spring. Its objective is to provide an active platform for research scientists, engineers, and practitioners throughout the world to present their latest research findings, ideas, and applications – towards the benefit of humanity in particular. TENSYMP has brought together a tremendous and rich diversity of authors and speakers from universities, industries, government and public sectors around the world, to share ideas and new perspectives on a wide range of research in science, engineering, and technologies. Several keynote and invited speakers will be giving talks, including Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Dr. Anthony Butler, Prof. Amit Prakash, among other distinguished and highly accomplished professionals. TENSYMP 2022 solicits original contributions as well as review papers on state-of-the-art topics. Authors are invited to contribute original research papers on research, advances and emerging applications. There will be best paper awards and student travel grants. Accepted papers will be submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore subject to meeting IEEE Xplore’s scope and quality requirements. All accepted and presented papers will be submitted for publication to IEEE Xplore, which is indexed with world’s leading Abstracting & Indexing (A&I) databases. Authors are invited to submit their papers in electronic format. The previous editions of TENSYMP were organized by the Seoul (2021), Bangladesh (2020), Kolkata (2019), New South Wales (2018), Kerala (2017), Indonesia (2016), Gujarat (2015), Malaysia (2014), and Sydney (2013) Sections.
