Remote sensing is the study of target properties on the Earth’s surface without making actual physical contact with it. Generally the data is acquired from either the aircraft or satellite. It is observed that the microwave band of the electromagnetic spectrum gives more valuable information about targets on the Earth. Microwaves can penetrate the atmosphere in almost all the weather conditions like cloudy, rainy, foggy etc. It works in day and night and can be used to measure soil moisture. It can penetrate through the forest canopy. Microwaves are sensitive to dielectric properties of target. They are sensitive to the surface roughness and to man-made objects depending upon the structure and shape. There are two types of microwave remote sensing. In the active remote sensing, a sensor has its own source of illumination while in passive sensing, sensors records naturally emitted microwave radiation from objects.
Following are the application areas of imaging radar:
• Snow and ice monitoring.
• Monitoring the use of land, forestry and also the agriculture area.
• Flood monitoring.
• Studying soil moisture, wetlands and the surface movements caused by earthquakes and glacier advancement.

Prof. Turkar is a highly talented, dedicated, and performance‐driven professional with more than 10 years of academic and 6 years of industry experience. She an excellent communicator and academic administrator. Prof. Turkar did a Diploma in Industrial Electronics in the Government Polytechnic, Bandra, B.E. in Electronics in Thadomal Shahani Engineering College, M.E. in Control systems in V.J.T.I. and Ph.D. in IIT Bombay. She has extensively published in various international journals and conference proceedings.
