Quality evaluation for digital visual signals is one of the basic and challenging problems in the field of image and video processing as well as many practical situations, such as system evaluation, implementation, optimization (e.g., encoding), and monitoring (e.g. transmission). It is now commonly known that the standard image quality measures of mean square error (MSE) and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) are no longer valid measures to match the human visual perception. In the last decade, significant research work has taken place to develop objective image and video quality measures that correlate well with human visual system. We will address this pertinent issue and focus on structural quality measures including SSIM, multi-scale SSIM, VSNR, video quality index, etc. An interactive demonstration session will be held where audience can play with these visual quality assessment tools using MATLAB environment.
Short Biography of the speaker:
Mr. Santosh Chapaneri completed his MS in ECE from University of Arizona, USA. He worked in industry for 5 years on software development at Patni (India) and Microsoft Corp. (USA), and in academics for 6 years. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor at St. Francis Institute of Technology, Mumbai. His research area includes image and video processing, speech processing, multimedia and software development. He has published 18 papers in various international journals and conferences.
